Island County Climate Emergency Declaration

United Student Leaders is campaigning for Island County to declare a Climate Emergency. After agreeing to draft a Climate Emergency Declaration, the County is now finalizing a “Resolution of the Board of Island County Commissioners Affirming its Commitment to Environmental Sustainability and Combating Climate Change.” This resolution is not a Climate Emergency Declaration, as that vital wording was removed in the editing process as the County worked on this document.

This resolution was voted on at a meeting on Tuesday, September 6th, 2022. Island County Commissioners Melanie Bacon, Janet St. Clair, and Jill Johnson collectively decided to pass a resolution, bypassing the term ‘Climate Emergency’. While the passing of this resolution is better than were there stance was with climate change prior, they need to take the climate crisis seriously, and Declare a Climate Emergency. If you too feel this way, you are welcome to fill out this Google Form and share it with your family and friends who reside in Island County, so that the Commissioners know that the community members of Island County need this change.

It is incredibly important to pass legislation that will make a dramatic impact on the way that we affect our climate. By passing this declaration, our county will be saying that our community cares enough to make an unambiguous effort to improve the way we treat our planet.

If you’re interested in reading the Climate Emergency Declaration that we delivered to the Island County Commissioners Janet St. Claire, Melanie Bacon, and Jill Johnson, you can view it here. Thank you to all of our supporters who have propelled this declaration forward.
